Writewise
Project Statement
In the past five years, IELTS has always played an important role in my English study. I prepared for IELTS to meet the entrance requirements of the university, and then became an IELTS teaching assistant. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of IELTS study and preparation. Especially in the process of tutoring students to prepare for IELTS, I found that among the four parts of listening, speaking, reading and writing, writing seemed to be the most difficult part for students. This is due to the fact that, unlike other objective questions, there is a clear scoring standard, and students can check whether they are right or wrong and correct themselves after practising so that they can find their shortcomings in knowledge. The writing part is more subjective, and students cannot pass the exam by simply reciting sample texts. But if they practice writing to the topic on their own, it is difficult to find their problems. Because the evaluation of writing is multi-dimensional, including word spelling, grammar, sentence structure, logic between paragraphs and whether the content is consistent with the requirements of the topic. As a result, they can only rely on the teacher's correction for improvement and feedback. However, correcting students' compositions is the most time - and energy-consuming part of my job. This also made me think that many programs on the market can help writers improve grammar and spelling, and I can also develop an application for IELTS preparation based on those them.
Before designing this project, I first conducted user research and competitive product analysis. For those who are preparing for the IELTS, the main requirement is that this program will help them correct grammatical errors in their writing, and will provide them with some more advanced substitutions, considering that IELTS writing is graded according to the difficulty level of words. For the teachers working with Yasi, the hope is that the program will help students correct problems with logic and continuity in their writing, something that current apps struggle to do. There are a lot of writing software on the market. Grammarly, for example, can identify most grammar and spelling errors, but it can't provide more advanced substitutions for specific requirements. However, other software that focuses on IELTS learning often only provides users with a range of essays in the writing part, and can't really give constructive feedback at all. In response to these needs, I have preliminarily designed the following functions:
Categorized Writing Questions: Segmenting writing prompts into distinct types (academic, life, discourse) for targeted preparation.
Lexical Enhancement Tools: Providing a function for synonym replacement to enrich vocabulary.
Sophisticated Sentence Improvement: Enhancing essays by refining sentence structures and localizing expressions for advanced language use.
Customizable Scoring Criteria (6-6.5): Allowing users to set desired score standards, enabling the AI to modify essays based on specified vocabulary and sentence pattern preferences.
AI-driven Spelling and Grammar Error Detection: Automatic identification and compilation of frequently misspelled words and recurring grammar mistakes for review.
Auto-generated Knowledge Point Notes: Automatically generated knowledge point notes after each writing exercise, seamlessly archived into the user's note library for easy reference.
